AJ Preller has a fever, and the only medicine is to shake things up. This man is bored out of his mind right now. The start of spring training is only days away but something just doesn't feel right to AJ. It could be that Boras is messing with his mojo, or that his new blue button up shirt doesn't have the right number of vertical lines on it. I don't know. Just have that feeling that something is about to go down, that feeling that Preller is gonna Prell.
How can he do that right now? By shipping someone off to a new place just days away from reporting to Spring Training that's how. Every player in the Padres organization should know they aren't safe from a move. Well, hopefully a few of them are, but Preller gonna Prell.
Candidates Explained
Let's just say at least one person has go to go. Also for the sake of fun, I am only pulling names off of the 40-man roster. I am cutting the field in half right off the get go by saying that I don't think a Pitcher is leaving, so 18 guys remain. It's not going to be a catcher either, so now we are down to 15. Lets examine the best candidates.
The Hopeful
Chase "Swing and Miss" Headley is numero uno. This is the guy we all want to be moved, whether its now or during the deadline, we can all agree he's the best option. He's making $25,000 less this year than Galvis, Myers, and Spang combined. Move him for a bucket of sunflower seeds and that $13M can be used to bring in the tag team of Hos and Moose for this season. Or just get rid of him to make a PR swish for fans, and start Spangy at 3rd and Asujae at 2nd until Urias arrives around July.
Two more IF Choices
Javier Guerra or Allen Cordoba. Lets face it, neither of these young guys have a future in the system. I thought Cordoba showed some promise last year for a guy with zero experience above Rookie Ball after being selected in the Rule 5. Guerra has failed to move the needle after coming in as a part of the Craig Kimbrel haul. Might be able to get something decent for one of these guys, because I repeat, they have no future with the Padres.
OF is Crowded AF
Manny Margot is the present and the future in center. He's safe. I would like to think Hunter, Pirela and Franchy are safe as well. So that leaves Dickerson, Jank, and Szczur (that just gave me a dyslexia headache trying to spell that). I think the club still believes in Dickerson, and trading Szczur wouldn't quite move AJ's willy enough. So Jankowski makes the most sense here.
I like Jank. There's a lot to like about him, including those luscious locks. He's clearly the best replacement in CF if something happened to Margot, given that he has crazy speed in the field and on the bases. All of this gives him the best value for a decent return from a willing trade partner. In 2016, in 335 ABs he hit .245/.332/.313 and stole 30 bags while only making 1 error in 222 total chances in all OF positions. We were all exited to see what he could do in a full 2017 season, but he got hurt and only played in 27 games.
Recap and Prediciton
Down to four players: Chase, Javi, Allen, and Travis. Chase is the guy we want, but I have a feeling that isn't going to happen until the deadline. Travis makes sense, but I think Preller wants to hold on to him just in case. That means this player is going to be gone within the next week...
*drum-roll*
Javier Guerra. Sorrey Javi.
