Padres: What if you had to sign Mike Moustakas to land Eric Hosmer

The secretary of AJ Preller walks down the hall to notfiy Eric Hosmer that the Rockstar GM is ready to see him for their meeting. Hosmer quickly rises out of his seat exclaiming "Actually, we'll be interviewing as a team." Mike Moustakas rises simultaneously with his BFF, replying "We're here to FSU."

What if this actually happened? You would have to applaud the effort and sign them both to lifetime deals in my opinion. No brainer. Talk about checking off all the boxes. Confidence? Check. Good teammates? Check. Leaders of men? Did you hear how they hijacked that convo with the secretary? - Check.

Yesterday morning in my group chat with the South Bay Hot Stove this topic got brought up. I thought it was intriguing, so I ran a twitter poll and became so eager I couldn't wait for the final results:

Padres twitter never agrees on anything but 67% of the people say why the duck not, while 33% is simply being a stick in the mud. My research isn't complete, I must dig deeper. Hey...did you know that they have the same agent? How 'bout that.

Could the Padres actually swing it?

Early on in FA, it was projected that Moose would land a contract around 5/6 years for 80-100M.  Well that isn't happening; Mike is probably a little pissed at Scotty Boras for rejecting that 17,400,000 qualifying offer the Royals made. Nevertheless, the market for Moustakas is shrinking due to a few different factors. A key quote from that article:

"One executive suggested that a team could get creative with an offer, giving Moustakas a deal similar to the one the Mets gave Jay Bruce ($39 million over three years) with an opt-out clause after either the first or second year. "

If anyone can get creative it's that adderall'd out mad scientist AJ Preller. "Ok Hozzy, we'll give you 120 for 6 and Moosy can have 40 for 3 plus an opt out? Ok cool man, now pass me my vitamins I gotta call Dennis Lin." Don't let out a long and loud fart Moose, we might be on to something.

Ummm, you think the Padres are going to shell out those duckets?

Padres are currently around $60M for their payroll albeit without a completed roster. So Eric gets 20 plus 13 for Mike. If you get rid of Headley, then Chase and Moose are a wash. I swear to Ray Kroc that if I have to see that ass clown swing and miss at another backfoot breaking ball in a Pads uniform I'm going to freak out.

So now we're at $80 million (same price with Hosmer alone), and we have some legit corner infielders to go along with Myers, Margot, and Renfroe (or Pirela or Francy) in the OF. The Friars wouldn't have to add anyone else in FA if they didn't want to (eh maybe a decent SP). Because in a year or two when a gaggle of young starting pitchers arrive to the show they will look behind them and see from 1st to 3rd Hos - Urias -Tatis - Moose.

If you read that last sentence and didn't immediately drop your phone and/or spit up your coffee then go back to sleep and recharge your batteries some more. That infield lineup will make all of Poway go from six to midnight.

As I am wrapping this up I am convinced this is a smart and reasonable thing to do for Ron Ron, AJ, and the rest of us. So by using the Diegan Fan Heartache Formula, both of these guys will be signed by the Royals before February. FML.
