Nothing better in the gambling industry than being in a sportsbook when the room wins.

This edition of Gambling on #MarchMadness is for the vets, so I am skipping the intro talk and getting right into it. I won't be giving tips like in the novice edition, just some things to consider for the addicts out there. If you're heading to Vegas/Reno for the first weekend, or if you're just locking yourself in the detached garage for the week like I will be in PDX, this post is for you.

So here we go.
Action on Everything

There's a bunch of TVs for a reason, so use the technology to your advantage and get a ton of action going. SU bets, parlays, over/unders, props, etc. During the 32 games on Thursday/Friday this week I will probably have action of at least 28 of them one way or another. Even if you don't have the fattest bankroll like myself, you can still throw small bets every where.

There's simply no logical reason not to have action on almost every game. You wouldn't be here if you wanted to make one bet for every time slot. You're here for the emotional roller coaster, so let that shit ride.

Prop Bets: 1st to score 15/20 points
My favorite prop in existence no matter the sport. Sometimes I'm too anxious and can't wait for a whole game or even a half, to get a result. When this is the case, I bet on the first team score 15/20 points (whatever is available). Note: For the hardcore thrill seekers out there, there is usually a first team to score prop, but the odds aren't great on those.

The best way to bet on this is by doing a little research on the underdogs. Find a team who shoots well from 3pt land because that will usually get the job done. Find some good odds (I usually try to find something at minimum +175) and lay down some cash that your squad starts off hot.

I still remember when Mercer had roughly +300 odds on this a few years back vs Duke. I hopped on it and rejoiced as if the Padres won the WS when they hit a three to get them over 15 before the Blue Devils. Mercer went on to beat Duke that game earning me more $$ (f*ck Duke - Betting on Iona for sure).

Pro's Move: 2nd half betting
Spending time in Sportsbooks will provide you with some interactions with the Pros if you're not a complete Dbag. Sometimes they drop some knowledge on you, so make sure you're sober enough to remember.

One time I couldn't make up my mind about a game, and was thinking out loud in the window line. A creepy looking fellow leaning up against a pillar just says to me something to the tune of "I'm waiting to bet on the 2nd half because I can't decide either."

I took the man's advice. Depending on how the first half goes, the line could become more clear for the 2nd half. So use this strategy when you cannot decide on that opening line and have your arms raised when the clock hits triple zero.

System Bets
The following strategic bets have been gathered from Pros (suspect) and Joes (rando drunks) through the years, and are no where near fail-proof systems. Having said that, they are a shitload of fun.

1. Ones and Twos

This is a fun group bet. If you have 5+ guys at the book for the weekend, drop this bet Thursday morning. Everyone chips in $20-60 depending on how many of you there are; need $200 total from the party (5 guys = $40 each for you non math majors).

With the $200, you place ten $20 bets. All bets are 4 team parlays that include different permutations of the 1 and 2 seeds of the tournament. For example, this year one ticket could be:
Bet $20 to win $200

  • Kansas -14.5
  • UNC -19.5
  • Purdue -20.5
  • Duke -19.5
Now you do this nine more times, with different games on all tickets. You want to spread out the teams on the tickets in case some teams don't cover (this will happen). If you choose Villanova on 8 tickets and they blow it, that's going to ruin your shit.

If you win just 1 bet, you win your money back (minus the juice). If you win 2 out of 10, now you're rolling in it. This is a fun bet that will hold your interest over the first two days of the tournament.

I have always said jokingly  "lets do a 15s/16s bet" instead. This actually might be the year for it since the top teams aren't that dominant this year. Stay tuned.

2. Always bet the Over >160 and the Under <120

Once upon a time an old pro gave the following advice: Always bet the over when its 160 or more, and always bet the under when its less than 120.

Now when I say a system bet, I am not saying it's full-proof. I am saying if you follow the system you will win over time. This rings true for this system. You will notice that is it rare for a game total to be set less than 120 or more than 160. So these lines should pop out at you.

If the O/u is 160 or more, that means those teams score a ton and don't play defense either. Lock it up right away.

The the O/u is less than 120, it is the opposite. Great defense and shit offense (think Virginia vs SDSU a few years ago -- not the actual matchup b/c it never happened, but the style of play). I am more hesitant to bet these because I HATE rooting for Unders, its excruciating IMO.

So there you have it. Go out there and kick some ass this weekend and have a blast while doing it. Good luck and #GoAztecs
