Dear Aztecs Men's Basketball Players,
What happened to you? You're telling me your not better than 4-5 in the Mountain West? You're going to miss the tournament for a 3rd straight season barring a
Malik and Trey, you've have't been to the dance since your Freshmen season. You want that to be your legacy? You want everyone to remember: "Yeah, we used to go to the tournament every year, until those guys took over." People will say you were allergic to winning; that you both peaked too early. That you made Fish retire because he was tired of losing.
No one on this team knows how to win. No player on the roster has been dedicated enough to their game, the team, the defensive philosophy. I don’t see a Dakari Allen, a JJ O’Brien, or a Dwayne Polee anywhere in sight. Guys who busted their ass and accepted their roles for the bigger picture. Guys who brought it on BOTH ends of the court. Guys who helped the squad storm into Allen Fieldhouse and WIN.
What I do see is the next Kawhi Leonard, and his name is Jalen McDaniels. You’ll be lucky to get one more year out of him because that dude is going pro if he keeps improving at this rate.
The worst part is, you guys CAN win. We’ve seen it. You CAN beat good teams: we saw it on December 21st. So don’t tell me there isn’t gas in the tank. That there isn't a recipe for success.
So what’s the plan? You used to be the best show in town. You gave the fans their prescription after football season and before Padres season. It was amazing where this program came from and what it turned into. And now...ugh.
In closing, get your shit together. Have some pride. We the people miss meaningful games from February through March. At this point, no one is expecting you to punch your ticket. It might be an ideal time to remind the fans, the country, and most importantly yourselves, just who the Aztecs are and what they can accomplish.
